The Challenge
A significant flood event passed through the Goondiwindi Council Region and caused havoc in the towns of Inglewood and Goondiwindi. The community had to be evacuated in Inglewood and many roads were closed, homes flooded and significant damage to infrastructure. Council took a proactive approach to be prepared for future events by learning what worked and what didn't in the handling of this emergency.
The Solution
Proterra Group were engaged to conduct debrief interviews with Council staff, members of the public and other emergency response agencies. A no-blame approach was taken to collecting information to ascertain what could be done better in the management of future events. Over 480 items of information were collected and collated, which were then prioritised into actionable tasks.

Council staff were extremely cooperative and more than willing to share their experiences during the flood emergency.

The Benefit
By learning from this previous event, Council was able to capture the positives and negatives of flood management and then used these learnings to develop better plans for the future.

By taking a no-blame approach staff and the community were able to open up on their experiences and share raw details of what really went well and what needs to be done better. This was a highly collaborative exercise which uncovered significant learnings and improvements for the future.
The Result
Council were able to take the information from debriefs conducted by Proterra Group, liaise with their stakeholders and then make sound decisions around improvements to process, people, training and infrastructure.

This was a highly successful exercise that was resource hungry, but very beneficial towards the management of future flood emergencies across the Goondiwindi Council Region.
